Behind-the-Scenes of Smoke + Ash’s 1 Year Anniversary Shoot

If you follow me on Instagram, then you already know that right now I’m in Miami. What I haven’t mentioned yet is that right before I left, I was working on a special project for Toronto West Queen West boutique Smoke + Ash.

It came about in the most organic way. A follower of mine on Instagram (hey, hun!) tagged me in a post S + A put up calling for a model to “Be [Their] Beyoncé”. Without even knowing what that meant, a day or two later I sent them an email and a few days later I was meeting with the store owner, Jaya, and the rest of the production team. Soon after Jaya told me they had chosen me to be the lead in this secret project celebrating their one year anniversary.

Find Your Tribe

A few days ago I submitted my photos to be featured on one of my favorite fashion web sites, Fashion Bomb Daily. Less than two hours later the owner, Claire Sulmers, emailed me back to let me know she had chosen me to be that day’s “Bombshell of the Day“. Imagine my total excitement of seeing my photos on a site I really admire with a very kind write up by the owner herself.

But alas, even the sweetest moments can sometimes be tempered with a little tartness. Along with all the positive sentiments from her readers regarding my style also came a few insults too. Everything from skinny-shaming to personal jabs and of course your average “OMG, she can’t dress!” rant. The Shade!?!?

Mary Katrantzou & Adidas Pt II

For part 2 of my feature on Mary Katrantzou’s collaboration with Adidas I wanted to shoot her trackpants and reversible varsity jacket. After mulling over where to shoot it I settled on a rooftop in the heart of Toronto’s West Queen West neighborhood. Almost exactly a year ago to this day Vogue named Toronto’s West Queen West neighborhood as the second coolest neighborhood in the world for their global street style report. This part of the city is where art, fashion, commerce, and coolness all intersect. It’s vibrant and always alive. What better place to shoot a set of pieces that embody all those things as well?
