A Day in the Life of a Unicorn

In that moment, I could either remain silent and feel uncomfortable about myself and what was to come next or I could choose to be a unicorn. I chose to be a unicorn.

Finding My Chill with Muji

I have no chill. As in, I have a really hard time finding my inner calmness, relaxing, and just chilling out. My inability to find peace and recharge is one of my biggest self care struggles.

Back in April I was approached by Muji Canada to come visit their head office for their first open house. At the time I didn’t know too much about the brand beyond having been in the store before and seen their selection of lifestyle and home goods. I knew them to be a favorite among YouTube beauty gurus for their acrylic storage cases often used to organize makeup but I didn’t know about their philosophy and what makes them different.

After hearing from the president himself, I learned that their products are designed to be functional with a clean, minimalist aesthetic. Their ideal life is a “simple pleasant life“, a concept at the heart of their vision.

I Helped Style Rihanna’s “Work” Video

You’ve heard the song a hundred times by now. You’ve seen the behind-the-scenes snapchats and preview pics. But what you don’t know is that just out of the range of the camera’s fogged up lens, I was standing there on the set of Rihanna’s “Work” music video featuring Drake.

In my about page, I talk about how in real life, I work as a fashion stylist. I go into more detail about that on my portfolio. Whether I’m the lead on set or I’m assisting another, more established stylist, I’ve had the pleasure of working for some pretty amazing clients like The Globe and Mail, Elite Model Management, Aldo, Joe Fresh, Toronto Fashion Week, and so many other awesome brands and businesses. However, I recently had the opportunity to add Rihanna to my list of clients and this project has gone to the top of my list of favorites.

On February 1st I received a message telling me about a casting call looking for dancers for a Rihanna and Drake music video. While I didn’t attend it, my interest was definitely piqued. Two days later I was invited to join the wardrobe team for the video and I immediately cleared my schedule. Two days later the adventure began.

New Year, New Me?

New year, who dis?

I know I said here that I’m not into New Years Resolutions and I’m still not into the idea of them but I’m a sucker for goal-setting and self improvement and the start of a new year just feels like the right time to look at life, see where I’m at, and what I’d like to work on.

Keepin’ it Real

I love you guys a lot and as part of this special lil connection we’re building I promise to always keep it real with you guys and that includes admitting when I’m struggling a little. As some of you may have noticed I usually try to post about every 5 days or so and if I go much beyond that it probably means that I’m out here floundering, LOL. #Help

Find Your Tribe

A few days ago I submitted my photos to be featured on one of my favorite fashion web sites, Fashion Bomb Daily. Less than two hours later the owner, Claire Sulmers, emailed me back to let me know she had chosen me to be that day’s “Bombshell of the Day“. Imagine my total excitement of seeing my photos on a site I really admire with a very kind write up by the owner herself.

But alas, even the sweetest moments can sometimes be tempered with a little tartness. Along with all the positive sentiments from her readers regarding my style also came a few insults too. Everything from skinny-shaming to personal jabs and of course your average “OMG, she can’t dress!” rant. The Shade!?!?

Walking the Runway in Toronto Fashion Week SS16

If you follow me on Instagram then by now you know that I was given an amazing opportunity to walk the runway this season at Toronto Fashion Week. This is one of the coolest things I’ve been able to do and I really wanted to share that with you guys in a meaningful way so buckle up and enjoy my detailed firsthand account of my trip into Hayley Elsaesser’s “Carnival of Curiosity”.

It all started on Instagram, as many creative endeavors in my life do. Fashion designer Hayley Elsaesser and I both follow each other on IG and about three weeks ago I saw a post of hers announcing a casting she was holding. About a week prior the Spring/Summer 2016 Toronto Fashion Week calendar had been revealed and she was again announced to be presenting a collection on the runway, this time set for Tuesday, October 20th. The little gears in my head started turning as I read the phrase “No height requirement”. ‘I should give this a try,’ I thought.

On Tuesday, October 6th I arrived at her newly opened retail space in Toronto’s Bayview Village Shopping Mall. Hayley greeted me warmly and handed me a look to try on. I quickly put on a blue sleeveless top with a pink crystal ball print and slim cut metallic fuchsia leather pants. She asked me to walk for her across the length of the retail space. I thought back to the one time, several years ago, I had received a runway lesson from a former model. I was nervous but decided to give it my best shot as she recorded my attempt. “Let’s try one more look,” she said, handing me another wardrobe option. This time I slipped into a leather-textured dress with a metallic rainbow finish. Its fitted bodice and flared skirt ending above the knees made me feel like a walking burst of color. Again I made my best attempt at a runway walk. When it was all done I thanked her for her time and she seemed like she was interested in having me in her show.
