Change Is Coming!

I know I’ve been gone for about two weeks now and I have a very good reason for my absence.I haven’t said anything up until now but behind the scenes Love, Mirian has been under construction…

Long Live Atelier New Regime

As soon as my ticket was booked to Montreal I instantly started thinking about what emerging labels based there I wanted to shoot with. The first one that came to mind was Atelier New Regime. Modern. Street. Well-designed. Socially aware. In my mind, this collaboration was a long time coming…

Life 101: An Open Letter to My High School Self

Every year around this time a new class of students completes their current level of education and must decide if they will advance to a higher level or enter “the real world”. I was 17-years-old when I graduated from the charter arts high school I had been attending in Michigan. I had been accepted to Savannah College of Art and Design’s Fashion program with a scholarship and was so excited to be beginning this new chapter all on my own.

That was years ago. I am very different from the bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, out-of-state pupil I started out as. If I had to go back and do it again, there are definitely things I would change and some I wouldn’t. But since I can’t, hopefully this open letter to my former self will be of help to those now in the same shoes I once wore.

A Day in the Life of a Unicorn

In that moment, I could either remain silent and feel uncomfortable about myself and what was to come next or I could choose to be a unicorn. I chose to be a unicorn.

Orejen Fashion Lab: How Tonya Belle Turned Her Passion to Profit

While her latest business endeavor, Orejen Fashion Lab, is a relatively new addition to the world of womenswear, creator Tonya Belle is no fashion rookie.  A first generation Canadian of Trinidadian descent, Belle’s professional journey began as a retail store manager after studying fashion management at Seneca College.

From there she became a merchandiser for Tommy Hilfiger, before becoming the first merchandiser ever for luxury fashion retailer, Holt Renfrew. Persistent weekly calls to Holt’s human resource department finally lead to a merchandise associate position in their buying office where she began honing her love for supporting emerging brands.

She had additional buying stints at Sporting Life, Sears, TJ Maxx, and Target totally over 15 years of buying experience before she entered maternity leave and set her sights in a new direction…

Into the Woods

Not all who wander are lost…

Spring has been slow to arrive in Toronto. Winter came late and didn’t want to leave. When the snow finally melted, the cold still lingered. I waited for the cherry blossoms and they never came. All I saw around me was dry, chilled dirt.

It was around 6:00pm in the evening. My partner came by and I asked if we could go for a walk. When I was child, living in Michigan, I used to love going for solitary walks in my neighborhood. “Let’s go on an adventure,” I said.

1 Jacket. 68 Ways.

What do you think would happen if you gave 68 unique and different women one leather jacket to wear according to their own personal style? For the launch of their customized leather jacket collaboration, downtown Toronto fashion boutique Convey and leather design studio Namesake teamed up and did just that. And I was lucky enough to be one of the chosen ladies.

Starring in a Fashion Film by Smoke + Ash

Remember when I said I had something in the works with downtown Toronto boutique Smoke + Ash? Well on the evening of April 7th, at the one year anniversary party, that project was revealed. I was so happy to be the muse for a fashion film celebrating their one year anniversary as one of the coolest fashion destinations in one of Toronto’s trendiest neighborhoods, West Queen West.

Coachella Dreamin’

Right now I am the farthest possible from Coachella. Instead of soaking in music and sun in the California heat I am in brisk, windswept Toronto nursing the cold I woke up to this morning.

I’ve always wanted to go to California, specifically LA, since I was very young. The palm trees and laid back, unbuttoned attitude has always been alluring to me. Music has also been one of my loves since childhood so imagine how jelly I feel about not being at Coachella right now.

Oh well I guess. Maybe next year? But until then a girl can pretend. If I were there, this is an example of something I’d wear this weekend. A look with mix and match print-on-print and a bohemian, artisanal flair. Maybe we should all get into some fun festival season styles, close our eyes, and just daydream.
