Miami 2016 Photo Diary

They say April showers bring May flowers but so far all April has brought Toronto are last gasps of winter in the form of blizzards. These inches of snow, cold winds, and slushy streets have me reminiscing on my quick trip to Miami a few weeks ago.

I covered a bit of my trip on Instagram when I shared my experiences exploring:

the luxurious Design District with every high-end fashion retailer you can imagine from Fendi to Margiela, to Dior,

the Institute of Contemporary Art where I got a one-on-one tour of their exhibit by artist John Miller,

the breathtaking sculptural work of Damien Hirst and fine dining in South Beach, and of course

the Dash Miami storefront because basically, YOLO.

And even after all that, I still had a few more adventures I had to get into in my few days there…

Behind-the-Scenes of Smoke + Ash’s 1 Year Anniversary Shoot

If you follow me on Instagram, then you already know that right now I’m in Miami. What I haven’t mentioned yet is that right before I left, I was working on a special project for Toronto West Queen West boutique Smoke + Ash.

It came about in the most organic way. A follower of mine on Instagram (hey, hun!) tagged me in a post S + A put up calling for a model to “Be [Their] Beyonc√©”. Without even knowing what that meant, a day or two later I sent them an email and a few days later I was meeting with the store owner, Jaya, and the rest of the production team. Soon after Jaya told me they had chosen me to be the lead in this secret project celebrating their one year anniversary.

Top Of The World

Over the past few weeks since I came back to Toronto from NYC I’ve been in this strange space where I felt like I was trying to find myself again. I’d only been gone for a bit over a week but somehow when I came back the city felt different. I felt different.

New York has this way of changing me a little every time I go. It’s scary. It’s bustling. I often get lost in it. But in it I also feel reborn. Travel is like a reset button for my life, shaking it up entirely.

Girl Power in Isabel Marant

Yesterday was International Women’s Day and it had me thinking about what it means and what it’s like to be a woman in 2016 living in Western culture, specifically for myself, a black woman in North America. I thought about society and how it is to be a woman navigating life, love, the job market, and everything in between. Navigating beauty standards and the minefield that is female sexuality. Social Media. Economics. Daily life. All from the female perspective. I thought of some of the strong, smart, courageous women that inspire me like activist Bree Newsome and First Lady Michelle Obama.

All White

As February draws to a close I can’t help but notice the days getting warmer and longer. I’m starting to feel both my wardrobe and I slowly draw out of hibernation and I’m so excited to feel the sun’s rays on my skin.

Spring is that time to shed your layers and embrace bare skin. There’s something about an all white look that just feels so godly fresh and I love that. I love the modern, bohemian style of this look from Zara. The volume on the top is complimented by the wide legged pants culminating in a loose, relaxed silhouette.

Take a cue from the photo set below and rediscover a natural, clean aesthetic. Breathe in the fresh air. Find new paths.

Love,

Mirian

New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2016

Hey guys! I apologize for being gone for over a week now. If I told you everything I’ve been working on then you’d completely understand. From working a ton lately (including a music video for a certain pop superstar I mentioned on IG), to celebrating All-Star Weekend/Valentine’s Day in Toronto, to now finding myself in NYC for the second half of the Fall/Winter 2016 season of New York Fashion Week. This is my first time here for NYFW and I really wanted to make the most of the shows and events I was able to get access to.

I love free stuff so discovering the TRESemme Runway Studio at Spring Studios in Manhattan was perfect for me. At first I wasn’t even planning on getting anything done, I just wanted to take a look around. However, after meeting the photographer there who expressed an interest in wanting to shoot me, he convinced me to change up my ‘do. I came in with two cornrows I had hurriedly done on my way out the door and left with four neatly plaited rows expertly braided by a very friendly hairstylist named Kiki. While she worked we chatted about where each of us is from (She’s from Boston but lives in Florida now), the recent airing of this year’s Grammy Awards, and her favorite types of hairstyles to do on clients. Check out my collage below for the play-by-play pics.

Very Berry: 3 Lip Shades To Try For Valentine’s Day

T-minus 12 days until Valentine’s Day! Are you excited? I’ve always been a romantic so I’m definitely looking forward to it. So much so that I’ve decided to put together a three part series in celebration of the holiday, with this being part 1. Let’s talk makeup.

For a long time I was a huge makeup junkie. One of my favorite high school past times was taking a leisurely stroll to one of my neighborhood beauty supply stores and checking out all the products, testing some, and possibly leaving with a few new pieces to add to my ever growing collection.  I wore eye shadows, liners, glitter, and polish regularly.

These days my daily makeup routine consists only of mascara. When I feel like dressing up a bit more I’ll dust on some blush and highlighter. But every now and then I like to switch up my look more considerably and that is where lip color comes in. Lip color is quick and high impact. In one minute you can instantly make your lips the center of attention and that’s why I often opt for lipstick when I want to make a change.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to tap into that extra girly side of yourself and experiment with makeup. On a whim I picked up these three lip shades and thought now would be the perfect time to do some swatches and mini reviews. For the sake of the swatches below I used no other products like lip primer, liner, etc.

The Lust List: January 2016

Hey everyone! I’m starting a new segment of Love, Mirian called “The Lust List”. It’s a curated collection of items or brands I’m really feeling at the moment. I’m always discovering new things that I like so rather than keep all this coolness to myself I thought it would be a great idea to share them with you. This group is all about elementary school nostalgia, strong women, and puffed up extravagance. Here’s what I’m feeling these days:
