Behind-the-Scenes of Smoke + Ash’s 1 Year Anniversary Shoot

If you follow me on Instagram, then you already know that right now I’m in Miami. What I haven’t mentioned yet is that right before I left, I was working on a special project for Toronto West Queen West boutique Smoke + Ash.

It came about in the most organic way. A follower of mine on Instagram (hey, hun!) tagged me in a post S + A put up calling for a model to “Be [Their] BeyoncĂ©”. Without even knowing what that meant, a day or two later I sent them an email and a few days later I was meeting with the store owner, Jaya, and the rest of the production team. Soon after Jaya told me they had chosen me to be the lead in this secret project celebrating their one year anniversary.

Top Of The World

Over the past few weeks since I came back to Toronto from NYC I’ve been in this strange space where I felt like I was trying to find myself again. I’d only been gone for a bit over a week but somehow when I came back the city felt different. I felt different.

New York has this way of changing me a little every time I go. It’s scary. It’s bustling. I often get lost in it. But in it I also feel reborn. Travel is like a reset button for my life, shaking it up entirely.

Girl Power in Isabel Marant

Yesterday was International Women’s Day and it had me thinking about what it means and what it’s like to be a woman in 2016 living in Western culture, specifically for myself, a black woman in North America. I thought about society and how it is to be a woman navigating life, love, the job market, and everything in between. Navigating beauty standards and the minefield that is female sexuality. Social Media. Economics. Daily life. All from the female perspective. I thought of some of the strong, smart, courageous women that inspire me like activist Bree Newsome and First Lady Michelle Obama.
